About

Our Mission

The Canton Historical Society (CHS) is a nonprofit (section 501.3.c) volunteer organizations that works to preserve the history of Canton Township, educate people about civic history, and promote the Township’s cultural heritage. CHS engages the community in the preservation and interpretation of human history in the geographic area known as the Charter Township of Canton, Michigan. We do this by maintaining free exhibits at the CHS Museum and at the historic facilities at Preservation Park. CHS also hosts events depicting historic customs, outreach to schools, works to catalogue and preserve significant artifacts, and research historical topics in Canton Township.

Our History

A small group of Canton residents began meeting in 1975. Within two years, the Society had been established and began its first major project: we acquired the use of the Canton Center Schoolhouse and renovated it to become the Canton Historical Museum. That was followed in subsequent years with the establishment of a historic park at Preservation Park at Cherry Hill Village. This park has included the Palmer Shed, the Bartlett-Travis House, the Clyde-Corwin House as well as other out-buildings. CHS activities have grown to include historical research, and preservation and community events.
